Hypo Half Race Report

Well gang, I got my eyes opened a wee teensy bit this morning. The third quarter (I work in the financial services industry so everything is broken down into quarters) of the second lap, I was having a bit of a panic attack...omg, I have to run this distance AFTER biking for 90km in July...a huge GULP!! But back to that in a minute. Got up in good time. Had some breakfast to get things "moving". All was good. Got to the race and was trying to do the math of, should I pay one of those imperial parking lots or get a parking ticket, which would be cheaper. Decided to park closer to the start line and take my chances with a parking ticket. The start line was at one of the big old churches downtown so headed inside and hung out with Jenn and friends for several minutes. Had some good laughs which is always fun. Headed outside when everyone else did and they started the run almost immediately, which was nice as I really did not want to be standing outside for too long. The first lap was awesome!! Right on target...had to really, really hold myself back wrt my heartrate and pace. Kept it really low in my target zone which was tough!! Felt like I was running super slow. Kind of like when you watch a horse race and you see the jockeys holding those animals back until the last corner into the home stretch. I just WANTED TO RUN!! Anyway, got the first loop done in around 1:04 which was what it was. The footing out there was a bit tricky in places. The second half started out really good. Stopped looking at my garmin and just ran. It felt good until about 1/2 of the way through and like I told Jenn, it wasn't a gradual decline, I felt like I fell off a cliff!! But did not stop, I kept telling myself, you have given birth with no drugs, this is not near as bad, just keep putting one foot in front of the other, right, left, right, left. I was impressed that I did not play any of my ususal mental games with myself. It was a beautiful day, and heck, I was running a HALF MARATHON!! As soon as I came off the lava fields (freeway bridge...what was with that path? OMG, I could see a sprained ankle in my near future) I could feel the home stretch. Stopped briefly to talk to Jenn's mom, and another gal I knew. Stopped again to help my 5 year old over the snow bank so he could run the last bit with me...which we actually walked, because he "got hot and tired" and came in at around 2:12. I have to tell you that I was really happy I ran this today so far out from July. I learned a ton today!! And have a ton of questions for Justin Monday morning...And I didn't get a parking ticket...bonus!!
info from garmin: 2:12:22; 13.32miles; 9.56average pace (min/mile)
