an pretty good bike ride

I had a loooong bike ride to do today...loooong for me. The schedule called for 2.5 hours. So I multi tasked and biked out to Pike Lake where the TKD school was having a fun day in the park!! Ended up being just shy of 2 hours but I was cool with that. TKD classes and then a bbq and then some water gun fights and soccer games. Was a very nice day and a really good bike ride. I think those plyometric workouts I have been doing are helping. I went out Valley Road and did the two hills out there twice. And I was cruising!! Was lots of fun.
On the way back into town, we needed gas and stopped at the little Pike Lake gas station. There was an older lady sitting on the bench with her bike and all decked out in her biking gear. She was on her cell phone when we pulled up. When she got off the phone, I asked if she was okay and if she needed a ride back into town. She said she was fine but thanks. She was wearing an MS Bike jersey so I asked about the MS Bike Tour coming up. She told me all about it and of course I told her I would be there. She then asked if I was on a team and invited me onto hers!!! She started cycling at age 50 and has done the tour the last 12 years.
My new team's name is "Back of the Bus"!! Hahahahahha!!! She was a super cool gal and was so warm and inviting and we exchanged e-mails and phone numbers. Now I am officially on a team for the MS Bike Tour. Cool!!

the ordeal is over

My truck was found.
At the opposite end of town. A caretaker of an apartment building called it in as he did not think the two guys who got out of it really drove a vehicle "like that". This actually made me laugh because I suddenly felt very cool and hip that I was driving a vehicle "like that". That someone wanted to steal. The truck was in good shape and no damage. It was super dirty and they bastards smoked in it and Subarus do not have ash trays (not like they would have used it anyway...) but they flicked their cig butts all over the interior. And they took everything out...car seats, garage door opener, the baby wipes in the console...they took my friggin toe warmers that go over my bike shoes!! wtf??
Maybe I will see them at a triathlon next summer...

blah

I am officially now navigating the system as someone who has had a vehicle stolen.
Sucks.
I have been asked lots and lots of questions...to the point where I am wondering if I am the criminal? Seriously.
Are you positive the vehicle would not have been re-possesed?
Who else drove the vehicle?
Do you have any suspects?
Are you sure you did not lend it out to someone and forgot? (Wha?)
At one point on the phone with the adjuster yesterday I actually said "Look...I have being paying insurance premiums for 20 years. I have never once made a claim...you have my authorization to look at my records. This is WHY I pay those premiums...for when bad things happen!!"
Get a grip!! I know...I know....they are doing their job...but really...
I have also officially started back into my training regime. I did a bike ride on Monday...a P90X workout Monday night...a solid run Tuesday...before I noticed I HAD NO TRUCK!!! At least I had a good run...
Talked to Coach Justin yesterday and he reminded me I have a half marathon coming up in a few weeks AND a 100km bike ride the weekend after. No problem. He keeps also reminding me we should be building on this fitness and not letting it go so next year is a great one!! Okay...Okay...I am officially back on the training wagon!!

faaaaak

My Subaru was stolen last night.
Out of our locked garage.
The shit heads who stole it broke the window, opened the big garage door, and drove it out into the alley. I am so super annoyed I could spit. I have no vehicle and have to rely on rides from everyone for a bit. Faaaaak....
The postives are these:
--My kids were so excited for the police officer to come to the house. Luke offered up crackers, grapes and juice. They got some super cool police stickers!!
--The police officer was super good looking in his little police uniform.
--The Subaru had less than a quarter tank of gas. Not much to get far.
--The officer said they will likely find it in the next few days, and it will likely be trashed...what the fuck...why??
Today has really sucked so far. And it is not even noon yet. I called my sister in Calgary and of course her great sense of humour made me laugh because she says "Well, at least it wasn't on a Monday, because that would have been REALLY shitty!!!"
On a lighter side of things...I heard a funny word the other day...dohment...One of those slap your forehead moments when you realise that you've just done something incredibly stupid.

the lull before the storm

I'm in a lull.
I don't feel like doing anything.
And I haven't done anything. Every night this week, I have sat my ass down on the couch and watched tv. Gah!
Dude.
I never watch tv.
And I have slept in to 7:30am every day this week.
Been awesome!!
Matthew and I had an intense game of Junior Scrabble the other night...I was even too lazy to read the instructions so we kind of made the game up as we went along. By the way he cheats. He turns the letters over to see which ones he is getting before he picks them. And Luke cheats at Trouble because he can't count quite yet...I am raising cheaters!!
Nothing is new.
Nothing.
The world is swirling around me but I have nothing real exciting going on. That will all come soon enough in September when school and other activities start up again.
On the agenda for the weekend?
Nothing.
It's gonna be awesome!!

other stuff going on...

Believe it or not but I have a whole life outside of triathlons!!
It's true!!
These are some of the other things I have been up to:
  • Getting ready for my kids to go to school. Matthew in grade one is so excited because this year he get's a desk...his very own desk! Adios to Kindergarten where they all sat at tables...an individualized desk is where its at. Luke starts Pre-school and has said several times he doesn't need to go to school...his first day will be an interesting one!!
  • I am signing up for 2 cooking classes.
  • I host my book club in September...any suggestions?? I am drawing a blank...we just read "The Guernsy Literary and Potatoe Peel Pie Society" Excellent book. I am in the middle of "My Sister's Keeper".
  • I heard on the radio today that we have had 8 months of below average temperatures. EIGHT MONTHS!!
  • I nearly shit my pants when I saw the fees for hockey. Matthew wants to try hockey. God help us all...I could care less if he plays but it is important to his father so here we go to the hockey rink.
  • He also wants to play soccer.
  • And he still loves his TaeKwonDo.
  • We are going to have a busy fall/winter.
  • Luke says he wants to be a Ninja Turtle. Can't find any lessons on that one...
  • My daycare costs are going down. Time to up the RESPs!!
  • I am the swim co-ordinator for the local triathlon club. All the times and days are set and we have a brand new, world class pool to look forward to this fall!! It is supposed to be one of the fastest pools in the world and has all of the latest technology. Can't WAIT to try it out! Just need to find some coaches...and the fees are going up...people are not going to be happy...
  • At work we are busy, busy, busy...lots of interesting stuff going on.
  • I want to shop for a house. A tiny bit bigger house. I don't need much but we are rapidly growing out of our house. But I want to stay in the area...it is an older area of town with lots of character...do we put money into this house or do we move? I hate moving.
  • Thinking of taking a winter holiday. To where? When?
  • My brain is full from my meeting this morning...the new CPP rules...doing the math on when client should start their CPP...oh the fun times.

River Run Half Marathon Run Report

Carmen (super cyclist from Frank Dunn)...Jenna and me

This is three races in three weekends. Now I am done for a bit!! But what a day this one was!
Torrential rains.
30km/hr winds.
Soaking wet shoes.
A test of mental toughness like no other.
I could not decide if I wanted to run this half marathon. Justin's words rang in my head all week "This fitness you have would be a terrible thing to waste..." I was watching the weather every hour on Saturday...it rained and rained all day Saturday and finally at 4:00pm the forecast changed to "Periods of rain" for Sunday. Good enough. I was off to Brainsport (local running store) to register at the last minute. As I was leaving the store and walking back to my car, I had some serious, serious doubts. I just wanted a good run. I feel like I have not had a good run all spring/summer. I worked really, really hard on my running all winter and everytime I have lined up for a race something happens...the weather, I got sick at the run in May, races done on tired legs from training...I just wanted to enjoy running again.
So this was my goal.
No matter what is going on, just enjoy the day, keep your sense of humour, put one foot in front of the other, and just run.Woke up in plenty of time and hummed and hawed about what to wear. I'm allowed, I'm a girl. Itwas not raining at 5:30 when I got up so opted for shorts and a long sleeve under a t-shirt. Grabbed breakfast, did a ton of warming up and stretches at home. Made my way to the race start and hung out in my vehicle until literally 45 seconds before go time. It had started to pour and it was freezing. No problem. I can do this, I am fit and I am tough!! I was really wishing I had brought some gloves...it was seriously cold.

Off we go and I ran with Jenn for a few minutes and we chatted and visited. I really tried to run in the moment and assess how I was feeling the entire way. I was wearing my garmin but did not look at it the entire time. The first half was pouring rain. I felt good. I felt like running. I wasn't breathing hard. My legs were peppy. I kept telling myself to slow down..slow down...slow down...

At the halfway turnaround...holy wind!! Julie...I am not complaining...I am just saying...holy that was a mighty headwind. No problem. I LOVE THE WIND!!!!!! Just ran steady and started catching all sorts of people. Walked up the sharp little hill at the Victoria Bridge...because I always walk up that hill...why run up it today!! Struggled a bit mentally at the 16-17-18km mark....but I always do and my secret goal today was to stay tough in my head for these three kms. Just keep going...get inside yourself and just run...don't walk. The last km was as steady climb up a gradual hill and then the finish line was about 500meters away. I felt so strong at the finish!! Oh my gosh!! That has not happened for a very long time. And, I will have to see the official results, but I was very close, as in within maybe 90seconds OF A PB!!!!

When I hit the finish line I wasn't very steady on my feet (the race instructions said there would be gels at the last aid station ,I'd only had one gel (that's IT for the whole run!!) but of course they had none when I got there...) and a guy I know from swimming was a real sweetheart and grabbed me and put me in a chair and went and fetched a drink and food and cookies etc. Thank-you!!! He waited for me to get myself together and kept asking "You alright?? You alright??" I was good and really happy with that run.
On a side note: I bought new jeans yesterday. Size 8 new jeans.....That's TWO sizes down from what I normally wear...having a GREAT weekend!!!

i'm registered

For a half marathon.
Tomorrow!!
I was there today a mere 15 minutes before cut off...
No problem.
The forecast has changed during the day from "Rain" to "Periods of Rain". Those "periods of rain" are going to happen WELL after the run is done!!
Run report tomorrow.
Stay tuned.

the "P" in P90X

I have some ideas as to what the P stands for:
PLEASE have mercy.
Let me PUNCH you in the abdomen, cause that's how my abs feel right now.
Tony Horton (instructor) is a PINHEAD with his wacky sense of humour. How much product do you think is in his hair? It never moves!! He sweats up a storm but his hair does not move...
Did the shoulders and arms workout last night. The good news...I need more weights!! On the task list this weekend, to buy some heavier dumb bells.
I bought this P90X for my hubby several months ago as he saw the infomercial and raved about it. The system has sat on our shelf since then. He's been busy playing ball, playing soccer and hockey a couple times a week. I found it on kijiji and bought if from a guy for a fraction of the normal cost because he had bought it and never used it....go figure. Sure is cheaper than a gym membership!!
Now that I am triathloned out, I have always wanted to try some weight training so here I go!!
Coach Justin tells me my fitness is bad thing to waste and I should find another event to enter this fall. There is a half marathon run this Sunday but the weather forcast is for rain, rain and more rain. I have ran a few times since Calgary but I don't fell like running in piss pouring rain....I will decide Saturday, last minute of course, if I will run.
As for next year...I have no idea what I want to do. Leaning towards a marathon...hmmmmm.

plyo...what?

Plyometrics.
My new favorite word.
It just sounds so cool..."I did a plyometrics workout today!!"
The workout? One of my faves so far.
Still can't really move my upper body (tiny confession...I did only half of the chest/arms workout...I just could not face the second half...either try and die or call it a day)
Here is a guy doing the whole plyometrics workout...each excercise was 30-60seconds and there were 2 sets of each...the vid is obviously condensed as the entire thing takes 50 minutes but the hell excersice is at about 2:23 (just try it for one minute)...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLK4RQYcyXQ
Don't think i could have managed as good as I did if I haven't been running and biking all summer! This P90X is not for the faint of heart...

"This is the workout that will kick you panties off!" Haahahahahaha!!! Love it!

o*u*c*h

did a P90X workout last night.
can't move my arms.
how many "dive-bomber" push-ups can you do?
I did 3....of the modified version...
and not very well.

Frank Dunn 2009 Race Report

Another weekend another race!! Whoo Hoo!! Opted for the team version as I was coming off my half ironman last weekend.
What a fun, fun day this ALWAYS is. This race has been happening for almost 30 years up at Waskesiu Lake, one of our fine and fabulous national parks. It was a perfect day. And here's how she went down...
Rode up with our super cyclist, Carmen. We hit Waskesiu in good time and walked around a bit and chatted a bit with other triathletes we ran into. Met our speedy runner Shannon at her hotel and head over to the pasta dinner. Was a fun night!! Lots of laughs and giggles and trash talk. Carmen and I took off for our cabin at Emma Lake (I thought it was only about 35-40 minutes away...because I am always speeding like crazy...but Carmen is a much safer driver than me and it took us almost an hour...) Shaun and the boys were there watching a movie and I think poor Carmen was a bit shell shocked entering my world for an evening!! Tired and crabby and whiney kids who had had a busy day with Dad and needed to go to bed. We hung out, walked down to a friend's cabin for a visit, watched Ninja Turtles, went to bed.
We were up on Sunday in good time and made the drive to Waskesiu. I helped Carmen get her bike in order. I always find it interesting and learn something new watching someone else get ready for a race. Carmen just started triathlons this year and is also learning a ton but we had some good laughs and it was great to get to know her a bit better.
Made our way to the transition area and suddenly I had to find a bathroom...STAT! Wandered into the hall where they were body marking and the excitement and the aura and the energy is just so much fun on race morning!! This is such a great event because you see pretty much everyone from the local tri-community there...other races maybe not as people have their own race schedule, but Frank Dunn is a must do if you are from Saskatchewan!! No matter where you have been all summer, you get yourself to Frank Dunn in August.
Got into the water for a warm up...yeah...I warmed up this time! Something about being on a team...you don't want to be the weakest link and if a 1500 meter swim is all I have to do for the day...let's work it hard!! Was a really good swim. I was feeling strong and was bilaterally breathing and kicking like a mad woman. My kick is my secret weapon and I don't tend to 3-beat kick when I am doing the full race as I want to save my legs...And I sighted really good this time and stayed on track...makes a difference when you swim straight...
Handed the timing chip off to Carmen and away she went!! Dang that girl can pedal! She did amazing as did Shannon. We ended up in first place for the Women's Team event!!
Yey for Team Wonderwomen Rule!! A fun note for the race...the average age of the athletes was 42...isn't that great??!!
Shaun showed up with the boat as we wanted to take the munchkins fishing for the afternoon. We could not find a place to park that big-ass truck with the boat so headed down to the marina. Saw Jenn and Chuck lighting the run course on fire!! I bet it was warm out there...
The fishing sucked and Luke fell out of the boat (he is okay but has learned the lesson of "don't stand up in the boat when it is moving!!") and I fell asleep on the boat and ended up with at sunburn. But all in all a great, great day and one to be remembered for a long time!!!

Calgary Ironman 70.3 Race Report

My day started out at 4:30am as I had read on the website there were only three places in town to drop off your T2 gear. The organizers had decided to bus athletes out to the race start and were encouraging everyone to take these buses from three points in the city. The website said (in bold) do not take your T2 gear to the race start. So I had to get my run gear to McMahon Stadium before 5:30am. Thanks to my brother and Lori who got up (way early) and were SO excited to drive me around the city at 5:00am!! It actually was alot of fun with some good laughs and stories told and kept my mind off what was coming.
We pull into the race start and I knew the parking was going to be tight, but there was a volunteer directing traffic and asked if we were athletes and directed us to the lot straight across the road and Carter and Lori got some great parking. I spent the next while setting up my bike, standing in line for the porta potties, chatting with Keith and Julie, dropping off my T1 bag. I was really enjoying the morning...the sunrise was absolutely gorgeous. I said my goodbyes, posed for some last minute pictures and wandered down to the start line. I was listening to the announcer calling the age group waves and had not heard mine. The sound system kept sputtering and there were periods you couldn't hear the announcer. I had also checked the website and my e-mail before we left in the morning to see of any changes as my start time had already changed once. I ran into a Saskatoon tri-buddy and we made some small talk and then she drops the bomb...I think your wave left several minutes ago...SAY WHAT??? Holy Crap.
Have you ever had one of those moments when you are standing and the world just kind of whizzes around you? I was trying not to get upset and at the same time trying to think of what I should do. I went down to the starters tent and told an official (not a volunteer) there what had happened. He was great. He said not to worry as they will just start me in the next wave. But I should talk to the head timer (Mark) and he would be back in a few minutes. So I stand and I wait and I watch a wave go and watch another wave get set up for the start. Mark finally comes back and is very agitated and tells me the rule is that I just start my race...I am about 20 minutes behind my wave...tough luck...there is nothing he can do for me. The first official is still standing there and he says he has worked these races all over the world and as long as I was not trying to qualify for the world championships, Mark should just let me into the next wave. The two men get in a HUGE argument about what to do with me. Mark was quite annoyed and getting angry (and i don't blame him as he was under alot of pressure making sure the race was fair etc etc...) I am standing there trying to think and I eventually say "May I see a copy of the rule book? Is the rule open to ANY interpretation...? I promise you I am just doing this race and will not be qualifying for Clearwater." I sort of figured they would not have a copy of anything like that right there...which is a bit lame, on my part, but I wanted these guys to decide something!!!
Mark huffs and puffs and goes over to his computer and changes my start time to the 40-49 year old men wave. And that is where and when I started!! I thanked both him and the other official profusely and went on my way to start my swim.
The actual race:
I did not enjoy the swim. It was boring and felt long and the smell of boat gasoline was almost making me puke. I felt like I was out there all by myself, there was literally no one around me, I sure did not feel like I was in a race and I found the bouys really far apart and it was hard to tell which one was which. I then caught some of the swimmers from the wave before me and had to weave through traffic for the rest of the swim. But I had a pretty good swim anyway, it is what it is!!
The run up the boat ramp was fun. So many people cheering and yelling. I had walked through the transition twice the day before so had no issues about where to go or what to do. I told my brother, who was videotaping my entire day, that if he got a shot of me getting my wetsuit stripped...I would never speak to him again... Since I was so far behind my wave, my T1 bag was sitting there all by its lonesome, as was my bike. But it worked out as I had a personal assistant volunteer who carried my wetsuit and dumped my T1 bag for me and handed me my shoes (undone), my socks, he bagged my wetsuit and swim gear for me...he was great!! I thanked and thanked him.
The bike ride was great. The highlights were the hills. As in how good I felt on the hills!! I made my way up them and even passed some guys...remember, I was in the 45-49 year old men wave so these are the guys I was racing with all day...it was actually super fun and I passed alot of people on the bike this race which gave me some super duper confidence. My chain fell off about half way down one of the hills so had to stop and deal with that. I LOVED pedalling in my biggest gear down those hills!! How fun was that!! All those years on my motorcycle taught me how to corner and I LOVED passing people on the downhills!! The first aid station was a gong show...I grabbed water to fill up my aerobottle but then got all fumbly when I was trying to put my nuun tablets into the bottle. My precious cargo!! The second aid station was at the bottom of a hill and I nearly took out a volunteer and ended up stopping completely as I wanted to get my second bottle full of powerade. I felt like we had a long way to go yet and there wasn't another bike aid station...I did not want to start the run dry!! I did not see one porta potty on the bike (had seen them on the drive the day before but looked and looked and could not remember which corner they were at...) so ended up stopping at the side of the road and having a pee while a lady who was cheering held my bike!!! She was awesome and supportive and gave me a push on my bum like they do at the Tour de France...
Heading back into Calgary was a bit crazy. There was lots and lots of traffic and I felt like I needed to be on high alert. Coming into T2, there were 100s people lining the course and all I could think of was I really hope some little kid does not wipe me out!! The dismount line kind came up on me and I almost wiped out as I saw my family and I was waving and the volunteer yelled at me "DISMOUNT!!! NOW!!!" He was funny as he then says, after I was safely on my feet, "I know you have plenty of fans here today but try to pay attention!!"
I felt amazing getting off that bike. Freakishly good. I was so excited to run!! For once, I had nailed my nutrition...my legs and back and neck felt good...I couldn't believe I had just pedalled over 90km and I was going to run a half marathon and it was going to be all good!! PB....here I come!!! The bike ride had been a bit cloudy and I kept thinking, please clouds stay for my run...please. My brother got a picture of me running my bike into transition and I was smiling and waving and was having a great time.
Then the clouds went away and the sun came out. It was hot. It was SO F-ing HOT!!! At about the 5km mark I was in trouble. My legs felt like running but it was so stifling hot I could not breathe. Everytime I started to run, my lungs would say...hmmm...we don't like this heat. It was like I was running into a web or a mesh wall... And the aid stations were kind of goofy on the run. There would be a sign (Aid station ahead) but it wouldn't be for another several 100 meters. And there was very little shade. It looked like a war zone out there...people cramping up, puking, I saw the ambulance come a couple of times...there were aid stations at km 9, 10, 11 and 12 but none the last 6km!! OMG...I wanted to quit so many times. I got discouraged when I realized the heat was going to ruin my run...and wanted to quit. I was kind of let down that I coulda had that PB but the crazy hot day was not going to let me have it. Oh well. I walked probably half the run. I tried to chat with some others but no one was in the mood for talking. The water/powerade at the aid stations was warm and by km 11 or 12...I was literally in survival mode. Just get this thing done. How do you prepare yourself for that heat?? It was over 30 degrees and that hot, heavy air.
Thanks to Susi for catching me at the finish!! Of course I cried. I found the family and my kids were beat from the heat. My 3 year old was wilting and they were not in the greatest of spirits. I felt really bad for putting them through that... Once we got into the truck with the air conditioning, they (and me) perked up a bit.
Thanks to Keith and Linda for the awesome time afterwards!! It was great to see you all and have some post-race laughs!!
