breakthrough run

I had one today.
I was supposed to do it yesterday but sleep was a better option. And it was cold and dark and I am a wimp so I stayed in bed.
But today I woke up before the alarm and got out the door. It was a good, good run!! The scheduled workout was warm-up and then 4 x 8 minutes at my steady state heart rate. With 3-5 minutes in between.
Just for shits and giggles, I thought, let's see how fast I can run 4 x 1 mile??? I am a 9 minute miler. Always have been, assumed I always would be. Before CTS, I had an online coaching program that I was trying to follow but I could never get under those 9 minute miles, consistently. Sure I could do one or two but 4? Amazing how your head determines where your body goes...
We live in an older area of town and the streets were built on one mile grids. It is exactly one mile from Ruth Street to 8th Street down Eastlake Avenue. Here we go!!
The first one was 7:53...and I felt really good!! As in steady and not killing myself...but could I do 3 more? Jogged around for a few minutes, hit the lap button on Gary Garmin and away we go again. 2nd mile was 7:54...pretty much bang on the first. And still feeling pretty good. Heart rate in check, legs feeling good, not breathing too hard. Bring on #3!
About half way through #3, the wheels are trying to come off...it was a struggle...it was hard...I was fighting not to slow down...I was almost to the end...good form, good form, good form (this is Coach Justin's advice, always with good form...) 7:58...whew!!
But holy shit I still had one more. That last one was tough. I thought about just walking home. Coach Justin's advice also, is do them until you fail...so I was assuming this one would be well over the 8:00 minutes...7:59!!! One little second to spare.
I am super proud of this. I feel like this is a breakthrough as in I never thought I was capable of doing this for more than one or two miles...and I did 4!! Who's the rockstar now?? Hahahahahha!!!!
Funny story: The other day I found a five dollar bill in a parking lot. I gave it to Matthew and told him to hang onto it and maybe the next time we were at the store, he could buy himself something with it. He comes home last night after school and says "Mom!! I traded that money you gave me for this GOLD COIN!!!"
A LOONIE!! (for our american friends, this is ONE DOLLAR in Canada....) I guess I have some work to do on teaching about money....

nothing witty to say

But have been getting my workouts in...all of them...even the core workouts. Abs of steel, here I come!
Sunday swim: Back to the ghetto for Sunday swim. The fancy pool was booked so we were at the old aquatic center. I now know why I am finding the fancy pool hard to swim in...there is no shallow end and I did not realize how much I bounce on the bottom at the old aquatic center...as in, lots!! When I get tired or I am swimming up someone's ass, I bounce my way to the wall....and I love my tumble turn advantage. The big pool is going to make all of us stronger swimmers but have had lots of complaints about how it is not good for the "non" swimmers. Newsflash: You joined a triathlon team and guess what...we swim in big, open waters in our races during the summer...suck it UP!!!
Monday rest day: And my legs needed it. And Luke was up in the middle of the night cause he peed the bed. Nice. He insisted on no nighttime diaper and what am I doing at 2:30am Monday night? I am changing sheets and blankets and pjamas. Then he refused to wear the ones I had gotten out for him...sweetie, I love you more than anything but boy oh boy you are a huge pain in the a** sometimes.
Tuesday morning: a 45 minute ride on my trainer. My new goal is to out sweat Julie and wear my tire out! Oh yeah baby....I am wearing that sucker out this winter!! Then onto the floor for core. And I do not like to see all the dirt under my furniture...
Wednesday swim: Back to the ghetto pool for a morning swim today. Was a good swim. Not much to report from there. The coach is fun and makes it interesting and has lots of advice. We worked on streamlining today. Not sure how this will help in a tri swim but it was also good for the abs as I am trying to do that dolphin kick off my turns in the shorter pool. Except I can't hold my breath for that long!
Next up is a tough run tomorrow...actually looking forward to it! Then THREE Halloween parties this weekend...I am going as a pirate...a pink pirate...super cool costume I found. Y'all have to wait for the pictures!!

the ultra and small town football

This was my first Ultra Marathon...I did it a part of a relay because anybody who wants to run 50km on a perfectly fine Saturday morning is just plain crazy. We got a buff in our race packages...here's Jenn and Chuck having some fun with the buffs...

See Sarah...she stretches before her runs...

Chuck bringing in his leg of the run.

The hand off.

I have no pics of me. Was a good, good run for me. I was super happy with how it went. Felt good and steady. Had to really slow down around half way of the 16km as the route went onto a muddy trail through some pretty uneven ground. Either run in the mud or tip toe through the brush. I opted to just slow it right down and concentrate on not spraining an ankle. All in all a great day with some good friends and a good run. I did have two bites of pancakes afterwards and nearly puked them back into my mouth!! I could not hold any food down for about an hour afterwards. Yak!
While I was doing my run, Shaun had the boys at hockey practice and then out to a highschool football game. Long story, but a kid that worked for Shaun this past summer, a little bit, has been in trouble (lots) in the city, so his parents shipped him out to a relative's farm. He now plays football for the highschool team and is doing really well. He and Shaun got along famously this summer and the kid has asked us upteen times to come out and watch him play.
He scored 5 touchdowns today!! The first one was the first play of the game and he ran by the opposing team's bench and yelled at them "Take THAT,,bitches!!" Got benched. Scored the next time he was on the field!! Hahahahahaha!!! Made me laugh.
He is very, very good and is apparently being scouted by some university teams. My boys LOVED it, as they got to stand on the sidelines with all the "big kids". The kid even gave Matthew the game winning ball. I hope he can get his shit together as he has a whole bunch going for him. And that old saying "It takes a village to raise a child" is so very, very true.

8 minutes

That was all I had in my for a core workout today.
This?
Is pathetic. Justin e-mailed me today and told me to try for 15 minutes next week. Ummm...that would be a 100% increase in my core workouts...
Something to build on I guess. I had a 45 minute trainer ride as well, a nice easy, move your legs kind of ride. Looking ahead to next week, I have seven (7!!) hours of workouts. This is ALOT for me! This is the max I worked out per week before my half ironman...I shit you not. I asked for it, so now its time to put my money where my mouth is.
Coming up is our UltraMarathon Team run on Saturday. I am excited to do this!! My leg is just over 16km. My goal is to run this bugger at my goal half marathon pace. Yeah. That's right. The whole f-ing thing. We shall see. AND I want to see how many people I can pass...I am the third and last runner so many out there will be finishing their 50km and I am going to try and run as many of them down as I can!!

Novice B Team 4 goals Novice A Team 2

Well, Matthew won his first hockey game!! It was so fun and cute to watch. I swear if you want to get back to what sport is really about and what FUN with sport is about, come see a Novice hockey game. They have NO IDEA what they are doing....kind of like me and Jenna at our first triathlon at Waskesiu. They were excited and eager and keen and Matthew told everyone he saw yesterday "I am playing a REAL hockey game tonight!!" And before the game he says to me "Mom, is it okay to be nervous?" Awwwww....
I don't think he touched the puck the whole game...seriously. When he got close it was as if there was a 3 meter force field around it and he could not get any closer. Or he would fall down. The coaches were calling off sides and he got to the blue line a couple of times and would look at the coach with some wonder "So...here is the blue line...what was I supposed to do again...??" Very, very fun. Except one of the mom's was yelling her support in my ear the entire night. They played an hour straight, no periods, and the buzzer was set to go every 3 minutes which meant they had to change lines. Everyone got a turn and everyone had the exact same amount on the ice. Next time, Matthew gets to be goalie. He is SUPER excited about this!
And Luke is a rink rat.
If you have been at hockey rinks as a kid, like I was, you know what I mean...
I had some more fartleks to do today but Luke fell out of bed last night at 2:00am and by the time I had him settled down and back to sleep, I was wide awake and was up the rest of the night. But like a trooper, I got up anyway and struggled through a very, very tired run. Yak.
My girlfriends are off to Las Vegas this week to catch a U2 concert...I am doing the Ultra Marathon with Chuck and Jenna...only for you guys would I miss a U2 concert in Vegas!!

a run and a swim

Was supposed to a one hour run yesterday. I had zero time. Unless I wanted to get up at 4:30am to get it done before an 8 am hockey practice that was at the arena which is on the exact opposite side of town from us. It just had to get done today before swimming.
Up and at it and it felt.....horrible!! My legs were heavy and slow and I had to take a few walk breaks. What's done is done and who needs legs at swimming anyway!!
Got to the pool super early as we have to put the lane ropes in for our Sunday swim and wouldn't you know it, a new pool brings new hardware for lane ropes!! They were super easy once we figured out that a couple of them needed a little "extender" thing.
Was a good swim...only about an hour as I had to get home for a few things, one being a playdate Matthew had organized with his school buddy. This kid calls our house on Wednesday and he and Matthew have a long chat on the phone. They are setting up a playdate!! They are SIX YEARS OLD!! So of course I ask to speak to the mom and we get it all sorted out. Me being the paranoid parent that I am, offer to have them over at our house as the mom said she was out of town this weekend and the dad would be home by himself with the kids. Absolutely nothing against the dad, but I know what my house is like when I am away....a wee bit chaotic. Shaun likes to play...alot...with the boys...they get bathed whenever, they eat whenever, few chores get done but at least they are having fun...at least this is what I tell myself!!

we lost Luke

My Mom calls yesterday with a tale of her taking Luke (3yrs old) to visit my 95 year old grandmother. They have a visit and at one point go into the bedroom to check something out and when they come back to the living room....no Luke. His boots were gone and he thought it a grand idea to head out into the hallway of Grandma's apartment complex and then to the elevator. They look and they look and they look for him. He is found eventually by a cleaning lady sobbing and crying, wandering around the hallways. What an ordeal!! And that, my friends is how fast these things can happen...
I got my run in today...8 fartlek intervals...I am still not real clear on what a fartlek actually IS. This is Coach Justin's explanation:
They should be sort of a free-form type of interval training. You are running them 30-50 sec per km faster than your half marathon pace so they are plenty fast enough. Now, just make sure you are concentrating on having good form and a smooth running gait and you are in business. You can even spread them out a bit more over the run and do them “as you feel like it” across the run duration. This is a way to introduce intensity without a lot of mental energy needing to be spent on the workout. They should be fun (at least sort of fun).
This is Google's explanation:
Fartlek, a Swedish term that means "speed play," is a form of interval or speed training that can be effective in improving your speed and endurance. Fartlek running involves varying your pace throughout your run, alternating between fast segments and slow jogs. Unlike traditional interval training that involves specific timed or measured segments, fartleks are more unstructured. Work-rest intervals can be based on how the body feels. With fartlek training, you can experiment with pace and endurance, and to experience changes of pace. Many runners, especially beginners, enjoy fartlek training because it involves speed work. But it is more flexible and not as demanding as traditional interval training.
So...there you have it! The run felt amazing. Looking forward to putting together a fast for me 16 plus km as part of the UltraMarathon with my team next Saturday...The Poop Fairies!!!

hot potatoe hot potatoe....

Went to see The Wiggles last night. Luke's boy-crush. To give you an idea of how much he loves The Wiggles, he sleeps with the DVDs. The picture below is as good as I could get with his hero, Sam, the yellow Wiggle....omgosh he was SO excited. These guys are kiddie rock stars, and make about as much $$ as rock stars. Very good and very professional.

The man. Mr. Social Butterfly. Matthew. With his hockey teeth...they are all falling out at the same time...

I insisted Shaun come too...he was not so excited to come to a Wiggles concert, but sucked it up and made it out!!

that's two for two

Two days and two bike rides. Am I the minority that does not mind the trainer? I always have a workout to do and the time actually goes by not too bad. Plus I have to download everything to Coach Justin so I can't cheat....he sees everything!
Next up is a run and then another bike ride and a swim on Sunday....here I go again...getting sorted out for winter training. Training without thinking. That's why I have a coach, I don't have time to research anything, I tell Coach Justin all the time, just tell me what to do and I will do it...I can't think too much about it. The tricky workout will be my Saturday run that HAS TO get done before the 8:00am hockey practice.....hmmmmm.
About hockey. Had our first parent's meeting last night. I love these parents!! All so keen and nice and relaxed and fun. Some interesting folk there last night that I am looking forward to getting to know better. One of the mom's is a runner...have not met her before but trains with one of the fastest runners in town so maybe we could hook up for a couple of runs over the winter. Maybe, if I feel like getting my ego crushed. She wants to do a triathlon so I may have found a new training partner!! We are already planning the parents' Christmas party...because really, its all about us. Tier 3 hockey ROCKS!!!
In other news, I told Coach Justin I wanted to buy a new bike. Here is how the conversation went:
JP: Why do you want a new bike?
Me: Because my bike is old and it does not go fast enough.
JP: Does is fit you properly?
Me: Yes....I have had it fitted.
JP: Maybe go and have it re-fitted just to be sure.
Me: But I think I want a new bike!!
JP: If the bike is mechanically sound and it fits you, we have LOTS of room to improve before a new bike.
Me: Sigh.

sunday swim gong show

Our first Sunday swim at the new Shaw Center. I got there several minutes early as being the swim co-ordinator, I wanted to make sure things went as planned.
Of course they did not.
The doors?
Locked. Until 9:00am. We booked the pool for 8:30am.
A life guard shows up. No key fob. But I am told the door automatically opens at 9:00 for the public.
The maintenance guy shows up. Talk him into letting us in.
But the change rooms are on an automatic timer. And won't automatically open until 9:00am. I was feeling like I was in a sci-fi movie with all this automation.
The pool was booked for long course (50meters). The bulkhead had to be moved. I ask if we could move it.
Nope.
You guessed it.
It can only be moved automatically and nobody here right now knows how to move it.
I am getting irritated.
Please find someone who can move this bulkhead as it is now almost 9:00am and I have 45 swimmers standing here waiting to get into their Sunday swim.
The maintenance people come and push the bulkhead. We seriously could have done that. But only trained people are allowed to push the damn thing. How many bulkheads have I pushed in my lifetime? Way lots.
And the showers were friggin cold. This is what our 50 million dollars bought...stupid people and cold showers and one teeny tiny pace clock that I can't see because it is too far away...but there is a huge one on the wall, digital and......automated. No more rounding down my pace times....
Other than all of that fiasco, the pool IS beautiful. And deep. No standing around in the shallow end this year, because there is no shallow end. And it is friggin huge. I feel like I am in a lake. And I seriously need my tumble turns to keep up to the fast guys this year and I am not going to have them. I see me moving down a lane...shitty!

can't sleep

Having trouble sleeping so not getting any workouts in. Have tossed and turned every night this week with stuff swirling around in my head. The long and the short, I have too much going on. Triathlon training and working out has taken a back seat...as in way in the back...as in not even in the vehicle back seat.
Its all good stuff, just too much. Hockey is in full swing. Matthew had a 90 minute practice this week...he's 6 yrs old. 90 minutes. Isn't that a bit much? I guess they combined two ice times with the other Novice Tier 3 team and they all played at the same time. And yeah. He is Tier 3!! Love it. I even giggled and did and internal "right on!" when we got the news. He is big for his age but the youngest one out there and this will be good for him...no pressure, no craziness just plain fun hockey!! Some of the kids can barely stand up on skates!! As compared to the Tier 1 players who are little friggin rockets on the ice.
I took on the treasurer's job at the play school. Trying to get my head around all that.
The tri-club swim programs started this week. We made lots of changes and added more times and people are trying to figure it all out (ahem...Chuck...). And if you have a complaint about the new $50 mill Shaw Center ie. that bus routes do not go there...the number of showers...it is too deep...(actual comments I have gotten from people...)...I had nothing to do with the design of the thing!! I am just the little ol swim co-ordinator trying to organize your swimming life!!! Call the City.
What else...work is crazy busy. All of a sudden the markets have a great run and people want to invest their money. Where were you in Jan/Feb/March when the markets were low...low...low?? And all of the wholesalers are coming through town with all their info on what we should be telling clients. My brain is exhausted when I go home. And we ordered a new kitchen. There goes my new bike. But very exciting! Good bye 1964 kitchen!! Hello pot lights and an island and decent cupboards and a dishwasher!!! So I guess this means we are renovating and not moving...sigh.
Lastly, I bought a goat! Yes! A goat, a hen and some chickens. For a village in Africa!! Obviously, it is just a donation through World Vision but maybe some kid will be able to eat and then make their way to school and learn and thrive and then go on to university and get themselves educated and do great things...who knows but that is what I hope for.
That's all folks!!

a really good lesson for me...sloooow it down

All My Babies Are Gone Now
By Anna Quindlen, Newsweek Columnist and Author

All my babies are gone now. I say this not in sorrow, but in disbelief. I take great satisfaction in what I have today: three almost-adults, two taller than I am, one closing in fast. Three people who read the same books I do and have learned not to be afraid of disagreeing with me in their opinion of them, who sometimes tell vulgar jokes that make me laugh until I choke and cry, who need razor blades and shower gel and privacy, who want to keep their doors closed more than I like.

Who, miraculously, go to the bathroom, zip up their jackets and move food from plate to mouth all by themselves. Like the trick soap I bought for the bathroom with a rubber ducky at its center, the baby is buried deep within each, barely discernible except through the unreliable haze of the past. Everything in all the books I once pored over is finished for me now. Penelope Leach, T. Berry Brazelton, Dr. Spock. The ones on sibling rivalry and sleeping through the night and early-childhood education - all grown obsolete. Along with Goodnight Moon and Where the Wild Things Are, they are battered, spotted, well used. But I suspect that if you flipped the pages dust would rise like memories. What those books taught me, finally, and what the women on the playground taught me, and the well-meaning relations - what they taught me, was that they couldn't really teach me very much at all.

Raising children is presented at first as a true-false test, then becomes multiple choice, until finally, far along, you realize that it is an endless essay. No one knows anything. One child responds well to positive reinforcement, another can be managed only with a stern voice and a timeout. One child is toilet trained at 3, his sibling at 2.

When my first child was born, parents were told to put baby to bed on his belly so that he would not choke on his own spit-up. By the time my last arrived, babies were put down on their backs because of research on sudden infant death syndrome. To a new parent this ever-shifting certainty is terrifying, and then soothing. Eventually you must learn to trust yourself. Eventually the research will follow. I remember 15 years ago poring over one of Dr. Brazelton's wonderful books on child development, in which he describes three different sorts of infants: average, quiet, and active. I was looking for a sub-quiet codicil for an 18-month old who did not walk. Was there something wrong with his fat little legs? Was there something wrong with his tiny little mind? Was he developmentally delayed, physically challenged? Was I insane?

Last year he went to China. Next year he goes to college. He can talk just fine. He can walk, too.

Every part of raising children is humbling. Believe me, mistakes were made. They have all been enshrined in the "Remember-When-Mom-Did" Hall of Fame. The outbursts, the temper tantrums, the bad language -mine, not theirs. The times the baby fell off the bed. The times I arrived late for preschool pickup. The nightmare sleepover. The horrible summer camp. The day when the youngest came barreling out of the classroom with a 98 on her geography test, and I responded, "What did you get wrong?" (She insisted I include that here.) The time I ordered food at the McDonald's drive-through speaker and then drove away without picking it up from the window. (They all insisted I include that.) I did not allow them to watch the Simpsons for the first two seasons. What was I thinking?

But the biggest mistake I made is the one that most of us make while doing this. I did not live in the moment enough. This is particularly clear now that the moment is gone, captured only in photographs. There is one picture of the three of them, sitting in the grass on a quilt in the shadow of the swing set on a summer day, ages 6, 4 and 1. And I wish I could remember what we ate, and what we talked about, and how they sounded, and how they looked when they slept that night. I wish I had not been in such a hurry to get on to the next thing: dinner, bath, book, bed. I wish I had treasured the doing a little more and the getting it done a little less. Even today I'm not sure what worked and what didn't, what was me and what was simply life.

When they were very small, I suppose I thought someday they would become who they were because of what I'd done. Now I suspect they simply grew into their true selves because they demanded in a thousand ways that I back off and let them be. The books said to be relaxed and I was often tense, matter-of-fact and I was sometimes over the top. And look how it all turned out. I wound up with the three people I like best in the world, who have done more than anyone to excavate my essential humanity. That's what the books never told me. I was bound and determined to learn from the experts.

It just took me a while to figure out who the experts were.

smack in the middle of my run

I had a 1 hour 15 minute run on the ol schedule today. Started out feeling tired and crappy and it was spitting rain and cold and windy.
Sigh.
I almost turned back after 10 minutes.
But then, I see a police car with its lights on in the middle of the road. An accident? But there was also music blaring from that direction so obviously not an accident! I kept running towards the police car and then saw them.
1800 runners/walkers for the CIBC Run for a Cure!! Wow! The run was 5km right smack in the middle of my route. So I stopped and waved and cheered with the little group of people who were at the corner...why not...it wasn't like I was enjoying my run!! After most of them had gone by I started up again and told myself to suck it up and stop complaining and get this run in the bag. Ended up being a very good run that felt really really good.
My brother has signed up for Calgary 70.3!! Now I HAVE to do it. Or at least get my butt out to Calgary to cheer.

where did that week go...?

Friday already. Life has been busy. Busy at work in and out of meetings as one of our biggest funds lost its star manager and now we must replace him.
I am home today with Luke. My sidekick. He has not left my side all morning...so excited we are spending the day together! We have made a "smoodie", took Matthew to school, went for coffee, played with playdough and folded laundry. And it is not even 10 yet. We have plans for lunch, a trip to WalMart and the grocery store.
On the workout side of things...I did a run on Tuesday, just a short 30 minute jog. Took a couple of days off as work has been crazy with all the changes happening and my brain is exhausted at the end of the day. Was up at Waskesiu for the day with the boys from work hammering out some plans...they stayed, I came home last night as I wanted the day to get some stuff done. Hockey starts full on next week...I am so far LOVING the parents I have met!! We are Tier 3 hockey parents (yes...there were tryouts for 6 year olds...??)...no pressure, no aspirations to make the big leagues, just alot of fun!! They are fantastic people and I am looking forward to this year.
Today I was up early to get my bike workout in. I had the time so did an extra interval. I have been finding my way around the Training Peaks website and it is really good. There is SO much there...lots of videos and support and the nutrition side of things is super interesting. I am learning lots.
Sent Coach Justin my 2010 plans. We had a looooong talk this week. I have some lofty goals...so we shall see where the year takes us!! AND I finally signed up for the GWN Half Ironman....yep...I am good to go for July!!
