bundle up

Wednesdays are usually my swim days. But Shaun had to leave for work super early today so I did not have time to get a swim in. But I did have time to do a run. But it was not a very good run. I was tired. It was cold. There was lots of new snow so I could not see any slippery spots. My legs were not doing what they were told. Still got about 45 minutes in the tank so can't complain too much about that. Had a long talk with Coach Justin yesterday. We had a big long talk about power meters. The pros the cons. The whys and the why nots. They are expensive...expensive as in I am not sure I can justify that expense just yet for my triathlon life. You know? I have two kids I really want to help pay for their schooling someday....this is the thing I always think about when an "I want" purchase comes up...
Registered for the Hypo Half Marathon in February. eek! Let's hope for some mild weather right around then.
Had to start my push-up challenge again. Had totally fallen off the wagon. Did my first week, first day reps Monday night. 6, 6, 4, 4, max was 8. Today is my first week, second day reps.
I am beating my sugar addiction! Yep. I caved yesterday and had a piece (one piece) of fresh toffee some bad person brought to the office...but seriously, that is the ONLY sweet thing I have had in one week! And the two strawberry coolers at the party on Saturday don't really count...or do they?

Hahahaha, Jenna! You'd be so PROUD of me...My sister and her hubby bought a McCain CHOCOLATE cake and I didn't even eat a single bite!!

Here's to the picture of the amazing abs on your blog! Thanks, Jenna!! :) :) :)

And, Kelly -- you are doing so AWESOME. A little caving in is OK. It's the full on binges that get you into trouble -- LOL!!!

Here's some perspective. From a guy who doesn't have kids, and isn't what you'd call much of a family guy.

Yes, you want to save money for your kid's education. You already know about $ invested now growing, ect ect ect. Yes, you need to make sure you're meeting your kid's needs.

But you can't forget about your own needs/wants/desires/dreams. Parents that live through their children are sad specimens. Live for yourself, for today, with some prudent thought toward tomorrows. One of the most freeing things we did was to get retirement savings addressed, so we knew how much to put aside now, and we knew that what was left over we could spend as we chose.

Your kids will make their own choices in life, and will need to find a way to fund their own needs and wants. They'll value it more if they pay for it, than if you pay for it. Regardless of what the 'it' is.

I have been using a PowerTap since October, and I really like it. Once I got my training zones set, I found that I had been working too hard on the hard intervals and going too easy on recovery. I love all the numbers and all the pretty graphs, so this is a training tool that works well for geeky me.

Have you checked if you can find a used PowerTap or CompuTrainer or Tacx iMagic somewhere? Or (not as ideal) is there someone with whom you could split the cost and share the toy? Have you checked with your favourite bike shop if they have one you could borrow to try before you buy?

As a "better than nothing" alternative for the days ahead of sitting on the trainer, set up your bike computer to read the speed from your back wheel. Then, assuming the same resistance, you can get some training consistency regardless of what your HR is doing (e.g. if my trainer is at resistance 2, I am in zone 2 at about 27 km/h and zone 3 at about 32 km/h, etc.)

You and Jenna and your pushup challenge have inspired me, so I got a group of gals at work to do the challenge with me starting in January!

Good job on cutting down the sugar! I've been trying very hard on this front too, but Christmas cookie season is coming, and I'm scared...
