Out of the funk

Today. A new day. Thank-goodness!! And a rest day ta boot. I have decided I need a tri suit for the summer. Where does one go for such things in Toon Town? Have looked at a couple of the running stores here and they carry some tri gear but only for pixies...and I ain't no pixie!! I had purchased a pair of tri shorts last summer and that is what I have been cycling in all winter but they are kinda tiny...and they ride up...if you know what I mean. And I am prepared to have virtually the entire field pass me on the bike after the swim at Stony Plain but don't want to have be yanking my shorts out of my butt at the same time...my point...cause there is one...I have been looking online at some websites but holy shoot the options are endless! What do the ladies wear? Jenna? Julie? Susi? Any other female reading this blog? The longer shorts? The shorter shorts? A one piece? Two pieces? Brands? Sizes? Help!!
Training this week...An hour and 10 minute run tomorrow...swim and bike ride on Wednesday, another run Thursday (1:30 again) and a brick on Saturday. Make yourself a great day!

I have a sugoi size medium - bought it on clearence at a tri shop in Calgary. I was thinking of going with seperates this year - tri shorts and top so that I can pee if need be but then again, maybe I was to wear thick cycling shorts with more padding for a 90 k ride?? for a 180 k ride?? Is there change tents at Great White Nroth Half iron or what??

Remember that saying "Less is more"? That applies here. Oops, did I say that out loud?

I can't bike long distances in separates -- the waist eventually digs in and really bothers my stomach. I LOVE one piece tri suits because my tummy has no pressure on it at all -- crucial if GI issues crop up for any number of reasons in a race. The only drawback is peeing -- now this enters a whole new realm of discussion.

I have only peed myself during IMC -- 1/2 IM I don't. Here is the technique for peeing while wearing a one piece tri suit -- try it at home before you go out. Note -- this is not the "normal" method of unzipping and peeling down to knees. Aggressively, grab one side of shorts and pull up and over to the opposing side of your bits. There will not be much room because the shorts are tight. Squat and let loose, pee will probably get on your hand. Pull shorts leg back down and presto you're done! ;)

I have a Sugoi suit in medium too! I raced in it last year at IMC, and really liked it. The only thing is, is that it doesn't come with a built-in sports bra like the Zoot ones. I'm a 36B, and I prefer having the built-in bra.

For me, the Zoot suits are great except I find the elastic grippers on the shorts too tight. They were fine for all distance races except IMC -- you know as the day wears on and legs swell a bit-- nasty. I had terrible raised red hive-looking things on my quads at the end of IMC 2005 and 2006. So, Zoot is now out for me.

For the Osoyoos half, I made the genius decision to not only swim and bike in my nice padded cycle shorts, but then to run in them. NEVER, NEVER DO THIS. I chafed in places I never thought I could -- a burning, feverish chafe that really kicked in halfway through the 21 km. Cycling shorts are cycling shorts -- do NOT by any means run in them. They hold way more moisture than tri shorts. Tri shorts are great -- or take the time and change into running shorts.

Ebay is a great place to find tri stuff. Usually they have standard size charts -- I take a medium in everything spandex, for comparison, I fit into Gap size 6 everything. I don't know if that helps you out for sizing. Everybody's different! Also -- www.trigeeks.ca is a great place to buy stuff from and they have free shipping!

Desoto long tri tops are really tight -- I find them a little too tight at the armpits for me. Tyr one piece tri suits are way too tight in all the wrong places -- even though I have great bathing suits from them. I had my eye on a Descente or was it Desoto one piece tri suit that had the zipper with the pull up the back. The only thing was, I raced in a Zoot one piece swimsuit with one of those back-strap things and when you are biking, the wind will whip that thing against you --whap-whap-whap the whole ride depending on the wind. It made me want to rip it off!! And it hurt too!!
Which reminds me -- I don't recommend biking in a swimsuit style tri piece unless you have "ahem" folds of steel. It is just wrong on so many different levels -- at the Wasa Olympic I found that the way I was sitting, half of my bits were exposed on the seat for the ride. Nasty business, just don't go there.

I have tried on 2XU tri shorts and they looked terrible on me -- see: what Chuck talked about on Jenna's blog -- what normally only women have!!!

There -- I think that about covers my experience with tri clothes -- so far!! LOL!! :):):)Good luck!!

Keith...just for the record ... I meant that two piece tri outfits were good cause if you have to zip into the portapoti to relieve yourself you can do so without the acrobatics of getting back into the likely sweaty tri suit. I , however, had never thought of doing what little miss Julie describes above :) I am not fast enough to go wee wee on my bike in case my first place finish is lost...cause I would be far from first place and likely looking forward to a slight stretch of the legs :)

Kelly - Julie is right about how comfy the tri suits are to wear i have how uncomfy wasit bands can get and you never have to worry about running out of your pants or the tank creeping up.

As Julie mentions - sugoi does not have the built in bra but I prefer to just wear a nice sports bra under it - one of my favs that dries quickly not a heavy one - the little built ins and shelf bras do nothing for support my floppy dogs :)

Yeah leg grippers can hurt - my tri suit doesn't have them. i also bought a black and organce one at IMC last year for 20 BUCKS!! just to train in but now I think I could actually wear it with a sports bra and use it ...

JULIE - If I was going to wear full on cycling shorts I would definatly change for the run ... I can NOT imagine running in diapers!!! Does the GWN HIM have change tents??

AND OMG!! Folds of Steel? LMAO Half bits exposed - you are KILLING me here Julie!!!!
