800 meters of hell

Me. Tired. I had a decent sleep, not great but okay. But woke up super tired after yesterday. Not really sore but just an overall tired. Still made it to my Sunday swim. Looked at the workout and right smack dab in the middle was an 800 meter steady swim. Must be spring because everyone was there today, which means my favorite spot in lane 7 was full and I had to jump in with the big dogs in lane 8. All I could think about for the first 45 minutes was that silly 800 and how in the hell am I going to keep up? And when it finally came around, our fearless lane leader Jeff, (who has qualified for the short term world championships!!!! This means he is super FAST!!) says "Let's light it up!" and the fun started. The 800 was supposed to be done a 75 meter steady swim and then a 25 meter at race pace. So, me, bringing up the back of the lane, would lose them on the 25 race pace and it would take me the enire 75 meters to catch them. The long and the short, it was a hard (but not quite at race pace) 800 meter swim for me!! And I was TIRED!! I had wanted to use this and take a break so BAD....just get your head together, put your head down and swim! And if it was easy, everyone would do it!!
And I got some really good advice from one of our local hard core triathletes at coffee afterwards that I will share. I was asking him what should I be eating during a brick workout? I had eaten a powerbar in between my bike and run yesterday and first I had to CHOKE it down and then it sat in my belly for a good 30 minutes into the run. yak. He told me that the key is to find out how many calories you are having to replace and then find something that your body absorbs the easiest. I think I got that right....??? It made sense to me at coffee!! Something else to figure out...

That sounds like a brutal swim. Sometimes that's good when you're in the mood, but it's hard when you're not.

How on earth are you supposed to figure out how many calories you've burned?

When I got my garmin set up, it asked me for my height/weight etc. So when I do a workout, it tells me how many calories I have used. I think I am going to start paying more attention to that and refuelling accordingly. But not with a power bar!!! Hard core guy did tell me that there are standard calculations out there and I am going to ask JP what he thinks as well. He also said, practice, practice with the food/drink you will use in a race.

I say "listen to your body." It will tell you what it can handle. When I first started going out on long bike rides, I had major cravings for Hot Rods -- you know the really salty, fake jerky stuff? I started bringing them with me, until I found a powdered drink by Hammer Gel that has combo carbs and protein. And then salt/electrolyte tabs. That did the trick. The only solid food I can handle are bananas (only on the bike, too gassy on the run) and Nutri Grain bars --I can eat these on both bike and run(only 1/2 at a time). I use lots of gels too!

You know your body the best, and being a woman, your requirements change a monthly basis, if ya know what I mean! ;)

My watch asked me weight and heart rate zone stuff, and it gives me a calorie number. I suppose I could be convinced to believe it for runs. But it comes up with huge numbers for my bike rides that I just don't believe.

I suppose I need to start paying attention to this nutrition stuff.

yep...pay attention and that is what the increasingly longer training workouts are for ...test what works....then test it at your first standard tri. Change what doesn't work (for example i thought jube jubes would be good but I can;t eat solids on the bike and then bend over - it's much like squeezing a tube of toothepaste!!) and then try your new plan out at your next race and so on. I have hear that you need to take in so many calories / hour as well (the number escapes me right now) and that can be in any form. I saw a zip lock bag of precooked perogies on one girl at IMC ... she liked how easy they went down and she threw salt on them in the bag. Kinda clever if you like back-warmed precooked bland perogies ;)
