Our first Sunday swim at the new Shaw Center. I got there several minutes early as being the swim co-ordinator, I wanted to make sure things went as planned.
Of course they did not.
The doors?
Locked. Until 9:00am. We booked the pool for 8:30am.
A life guard shows up. No key fob. But I am told the door automatically opens at 9:00 for the public.
The maintenance guy shows up. Talk him into letting us in.
But the change rooms are on an automatic timer. And won't automatically open until 9:00am. I was feeling like I was in a sci-fi movie with all this automation.
The pool was booked for long course (50meters). The bulkhead had to be moved. I ask if we could move it.
Nope.
You guessed it.
It can only be moved automatically and nobody here right now knows how to move it.
I am getting irritated.
Please find someone who can move this bulkhead as it is now almost 9:00am and I have 45 swimmers standing here waiting to get into their Sunday swim.
The maintenance people come and push the bulkhead. We seriously could have done that. But only trained people are allowed to push the damn thing. How many bulkheads have I pushed in my lifetime? Way lots.
And the showers were friggin cold. This is what our 50 million dollars bought...stupid people and cold showers and one teeny tiny pace clock that I can't see because it is too far away...but there is a huge one on the wall, digital and......automated. No more rounding down my pace times....
Other than all of that fiasco, the pool IS beautiful. And deep. No standing around in the shallow end this year, because there is no shallow end. And it is friggin huge. I feel like I am in a lake. And I seriously need my tumble turns to keep up to the fast guys this year and I am not going to have them. I see me moving down a lane...shitty!

Automation. I say BAH! Just one more thing to break. In my day a crank to roll the car window down was newfangled and showed dangerous tendencies toward dandification. Let alone electric windows!!! Softies!
Have they tested all this automation in the -50 butt freezing weather yet? That should be interesting.
And if your organizing it, you're allowed to swim in any lane you like, and if they don't like it, THEY get to organize. So there.
