i feel so guilty!!!
I did a run on Tuesday morning. My legs did not show me any love at all. I was supposed to do some intervals but the legs were super tired after that loooong run on Saturday and swim on Sunday and Wii Tennis, also on Sunday.
I break a sweat with Wii Tennis and I CANNOT beat my 7 year old! And I try. Real hard.
So the Tuesday run was just an hour of steady running. Why disappoint myself with some shitty intervals!? Then Wednesday swim came along. I got up. I felt dizzy. My stomach was weezy. I went back to bed! Slept for 2 more hours and then felt fine. Maybe I should have just gone to the swim...? But I am so not wanting to get sick....
I re-scheduled those intervals for today. I brought my run gear to the office to run on the free treadmill here. I am feeling like I might wait for the weather to improve as I hate running intervals on the treadmill!! But it is not set to improve until Saturday and guess we are all day Saturday...that's right, THE HOCKEY RINK!!! First game at 7:30am...wtf is THAT??!! Welcome to hockey.
And I am feeling lazy and thinking about how much they are going to hurt my legs and lungs.
Then I get an e-mail from Justin..."Glad you got the run done even though your legs were feeling bad. Every run helps your fitness and I think that working through the harder days helps make you a better athlete for sure. Keep up the good work!"
Nice.
I love the treadmill.
I love the treadmill.
I love the treadmill.
I love the treadmill.
I love the treadmill.
I love it.
I love it.
It loves me!
I love the treadmill.

so, about Boston...
I have thought long and hard about the offer to run the Boston Marathon. The company I work for owns John Hancock, the major sponsor of the marathon. I have been offered a place there in April to run, without qualifying.
I have decided I would be crazy not to take the spot.
This decision has not been a light one!!
I am learning more about what comes with that spot and it is turning out to be a kick-ass work opportunity. Kids, this is corporate America...its a game and to get ahead, you have to play the game. Like it or don't but them are the rules. I have a family and a mortgage. I need to feed that family and pay that mortgage! I have my dream job with lots of flexibility so I can be there for my kids when I need to. Then, imagine, being asked to join some of the movers and shakers in the company you work for, get to know them, travel to Boston with them and hang with them for a weekend (not to mention all of the very talented and fast runners that will be there!) and then experience the marathon from the inside.
Dreams really can come true.
I have the utmost respect for those who have qualified for this race. I want to be one of you some day. I got my package in the courier last week and it is an "Invitational Entry". It very clearly states, "You have NOT qualified for this race. You are participating on an invitational basis only." I promise I will not be in anyone's way!!
If anything, this whole experience has brought to life a dragon in my belly to put down the best effort I can in April. I have started my training and so far, the past two weeks, I have done more than has been asked, I have fought for every interval. I have done extra intervals. I have been pushing Coach Justin...GIVE ME MORE!!! I will not let this opportunity go to waste.
Someone asked me if this was a spot to Kona or Clearwater, would I take it. I said of course not. So what's the difference? I had to think long and hard about my answer. I have no hope of qualifying for those events. Ever. They are not even in my realm of possibilities. But I think that with some hard work and a good run, someday, I could definitely qualify for the Boston Marathon....this offer has come just about a year before I wanted to put my theory to the test!! Right now, I am about 10 pounds and 10 seconds per km away. I have already made the promise to myself that I will do this race a second time and it will be after I have ran a qualifying time. And yes, this means I have to run 3 marathons....eek!
Our little family has had a pretty rough year. The markets tanked, my income with them, my husband's business burned down, my sister has had a year from hell with being in the hospital with her MS to her spouse leaving her. And being a total prick through the whole process. My Mom's BFF has battled breast cancer and is very quickly losing her fight. We had a little cry for her last night. We have had quite the year finding our feet. It hurts to see those you love go through rough times. I have chosen to try to keep this blog on a positive, training note but it really has been a tough go. They say it is unlucky to turn a calendar...I had mine turned to January 2010 weeks ago...looking forward to a new start, a new year.
This opportunity has come at a perfect time. Just at the beginning of December after the fire, I asked The Universe, "Please give me something to look forward to. I am really struggling here." And then a little glimmer of something positive, something to look forward to and work for.
See you in Boston!!
run, run, swim
New Year's Day brought a run. It was minus 41 with the wind so...onto the treadmill I went. The workout was 5 x 5 minutes tempo run but I could not figure the pace out on the tready so I just went by heart rate. I ended up doing 6 as I had the time and the Outdoor Classic (hockey) was on the television so was kind of into it!! I didn't feel like I had done a very good job of the intervals...I don't know if it was being on the treadmill or what, but I got to the end and thought I should have felt those in my legs much more than what I did.
So.
I did it again.
This time Saturday morning, and outside! Coach Justin says to try to hold a 5:30 per km pace for all 5 intervals...I did 5 of them all just under 5:20...except the sixth one but it was the last one so I can give myself a bit of a break...no? The run ended up being about an hour and 20 minutes as I was way the hell away from home and realized, oh crap, I have to run home! And it was cold. And my gear was frozen to my body. And I stopped into the Mac's to grab a coffee as it is less than a block from our house and the gal behind the counter said "OH MY GOD!! You have icicles hanging from your hat!!! GROSSSS!!!" Nice.
Today was a swim. Was a bit of a gong show swim. No coach and we made up a workout. I don't even really remember what it was but it was around 2500 meters. Was a fun time with lots of laughs and I am so happy that Tish and Jenn are swimming in my lane!! They make it fun and we have lots of giggles. My body was tired from those hard runs and I even did some push ups yesterday so my arms and shoulders were sore.
Looking forward, back to work/school/hockey/TKD/schedule etc tomorrow. I have a super clean house and cupboards full of groceries so we are good to go, for a few weeks anyway.
Some great news...Planned training hours for the week were 6:15 and my actual hours 6:16. Finally!! I did one extra minute!! Whoop whoop!!!
PS: Just got an e-mail from Coach Justin...he biked another 5 hours today with the big man L.A. He is SO excited to be doing some training with Mr. Armstrong. Do you blame him?
