my first 5km run

Weird. That is the first time I have ever ran 5km as an event. And what an event it was! Does "km" mean "kill me"? Cause I could not feel my fingers or toes for the first 2km. It was cold...minus 20; minus 30 with the wind. The footing was good, a few places where I had to slow up as I wasn't sure, but I have to say the city does a fantastic job clearing the paths after a snow fall. The cold was a good enough reason to run fast to get the darn thing done!
First kilometer was to just find a groove and get by some of the people who were running side by side (?) I was keen to see what I could pull off on this 5km so I dodged around most of them. The second km was good. Felt really strong and fit and was using my big swimming arms and shoulders to get a rythm. Saw a gal up ahead of me and just focused on her and tried to pull her in. Got to the half way mark and they had said there were two orange stakes that were half way...she ran by them, about 10 meters, I turned around at the stakes!! So now I was ahead of her...running into the wind. Duh. Anyway, I heard her behind me the entire way and it kind of motivated me to stay ahead of her. If she hadn't of been there, I know I would have just slowed down or started daydreaming about something but I was really trying to run hard!! At the 4km mark, I still felt really good. I was waiting and waiting for the wheels to fall off but they never did. This was good news!! AND I out sprinted the gal to the end! ME!! Sprinted!!! All in all I was pleased with this effort. I ran back out a ways to run in with Jenna and Alex. Alex was so very cute...the effort and concentration on his face was priceless!! Loved. It. He gave er hell the last few meters and all the gang was cheering for him which was super cool.
My end time was 27 minutes 23 seconds. It is what it is and something to improve on.

thanks for the run back - he was bummed we were last (i think) but I said we can still beat Kelly :) He felt great later when he realized he did it about 2 1/2 minutes faster than the res run.... this will be good for all of us. And when he let'er buck I was unprepared - I never though he had that much left since he asked me if it was bad to vomit ....lol I loved it - it was great everyone stayed to the end to cheer him in!!
