let's do some...

...fartlek intervals!!
Today's workout was some steady running and then 5 sets of 1 minute fartlek intervals with 2 minutes easy jogging in between. I asked if I could do them on the treadmill (cause it is still too cold out for me to do this outside) and this was the response:
  • The easy/moderate part of your running should be comfortable the "intervals" should be easy to ramp up the speed until you are running faster than normally and just on the edge of control and good form. If your form falls off, you are running too fast. In between, return back to that comfortable pace and try to catch your breath to get ready for the next effort. I like to think of these as surges in pace. The nice thing about the treadmill is that you can see your progress as you will know exactly how fast you are running the efforts, so you can build on prior workouts and try to have a slow but steady increase in your interval pace....

The funny thing is that during one of the intervals I was running super hard (in my opinion), on the "edge of control", I look in the mirror to check out my form....and I just...looked...so...slow! And a bit dorky in my super old Huskies shirt (circa 1994) and my adidas shorts with the hem completely gone...maybe I should invest in some cool workout clothes then I will feel cool? Felt fast, looked slow. Aw well, they are done and in the bank so that's what counts! Next up is a swim tomorrow. The workout he sent me is some crazy meters in the pool...3000 meters in one hour. Think I can do it? Should be able to as the main set is a bunch of 200s. But NO chatting tomorrow!!

3 K swim. In an hour. For you. As I recall, you could have a coffee and improve your tan during that hour, and still get your swim done.

Interesting take on the interval workout. I think I'd be horrified to see video of me running, swimming or biking.

I always watch my facial muscles bounce up and down, up and down in the mirror. I watch my hair get sweatier and sweatier, and thus know when it is time to reclip my wayward chunk of short hair back to my noggin. LOL!!!

You can totally do the 3000m in an hour!!! :) :) :) :)

Oh yeah, and good workout clothes are an imperative. Trust me, Kelly -- once you get a true wicking pair of shorts, properly wicking socks, and sports bra and shirt -- YOU WILL NEVER GO BACK.

:) :) :)
